Alrighty guys! Thanks for your patience as I took a bit of a break while we moved house! It all went smoothly but has been a very busy season for us, so podcasting had to take a bit of a backseat while we got most of our boxes unpacked. I reckon we wont be fully unpacked for a long time yet, but it's nice to have the main areas done! Anyways, I'm so glad to have this episode ready for you all, I loved chatting with Rita Pitlo about all the things. She's wife to Brendan (many of you may know him as teacher at JCCC) and they have 6 kids ranging in age from 1 to 14. As you can imagine, she's pretty busy, but she allowed me to twist her arm into coming on the podcast. I'm so glad she did, because she had plenty of practical tips to share! I especially loved how she went into more detail on her washing system and the simple products she uses! I'm sure you'll also love her recipes, cleaning tips, and even some op shop recommendations near the end - stick around for that!
As usual, here's the summary:
Family activities/traditions:
- kids birthday presents: get one present and they choose an outing with the family
- always have family time in the morning. Kids get up and eat brekky when it suits them, but all together for devotions at a set time.
Recipes: (links/photos below)
- sausage pasta
- apple cake
Washing tips:
- if possible, run 2 loads simultaneously with 2 machines
- hang dark pants/shorts inside out to prevent fading (esp school uniforms)
- when kids don't reliably put clothes in basket, collect washing from bathroom floor every night, then organise dirty washing in IKEA trofast cupboards
- when buckets are full, then it goes in the washing machine
- if not enough for a full load - add in bath towels, avoids a dedicated load for towels
- use velvet soap to scrub stains, especially whites, including towels and school shirts
- hang whites in the sun to whiten
- use dishwashing liquid for paint stains
- wash whites cold so they don't go grey
- use only 1 tsp of washing powder (any brand)
Cleaning:
- everyone helps on Saturdays
- starts straight after family devotions
- kids have chores, no set time length, just as long as it takes them to get it done.
- chores are rotated
- Norwex products - mop
- mopping - use sink to pour boiling water over mop with pad attached. If needed also squirt a line of dish soap on mop pad
- gumption
- Norwex hand cloth
Op shops:
- Forget Me Not Op shop, Kelmscott
- Take 2 Op Shop, Harrisdale
